One of my favorite charities is Texas Hearing and Service Dogs.
What Hearing and Service Dogs Do
Texas Hearing and Service Dogs trains dogs to assist Texans living with hearing or mobility challenges. Every dog in their program is adopted from a shelter, rescue group or sometimes from an owner. They invest more thousands of dollars in training these special dogs and approximately one year to train each Hearing or Service Dog team. With donations, THSD is able to provide the dogs and training free of charge.
Hearing Dogs are taught to alert their deaf partners by touch. The dogs lead the person to a variety of important everyday sounds, including a baby’s cry, smoke alarm, doorbell or knock at a door, an alarm clock, and numerous other commands. The dogs respond to sign language, as well as oral commands.
Service Dogs are taught to assist individuals with physical incapacities. They help by fetching wheelchairs, retrieving dropped items, opening doors and refrigerators, turning lights on and off, getting help and moving paralyzed limbs. They also perform other special tasks such as assistance with clothing and specialized equipment.
Service Dogs are also trained to assist persons with balance while walking, such as people who have had polio, strokes or Parkinson’s Disease. Hearing and Service Dogs also provide emotional and social benefits through companionship and encouragement of greater interaction from others.
Texas Hearing and Service Dogs do not use punishment, force or any type of corrections in training the dogs. They only use positive training methods. All methods are fun with rewards and lots of surprises to help keep the dogs motivated and eager to please.
